The basic rule when investing is to spread your money between different invest ment types. This serves to reduce risk while achieving a satisfactory return. The main areas to consider when you are planning your investment mix (or portfolio) are:

• shares
• property
• fixed interest securities (eg. government bonds)
• cash and liquid assets (eg. bank bills)

The balance of an individual’s portfolio between the various types of investments will depend on the needs, character, age, etc; of that individual. However, in any portfolio, it is normally recommended that you include some investment in each of the four categories.
